The Marketing Tension Triangle

Most small business owners don’t struggle with effort. They struggle with tension.

Marketing always feels like a trade-off:

  • Keep costs low… but spend more time.
  • Save time… but lose control.
  • Keep control… but pay more or work longer.

If your marketing feels harder than it should, it’s likely because you’re stuck inside what I call the Marketing Tension Triangle.

The Marketing Tension Triangle

The Three Forces Pulling on Your Business

1️⃣ Cost

This isn’t just about free versions vs monthly subscriptions.

It’s:

  • Multiple software tools
  • Agency retainers
  • The premium features that add costs
  • The restrictions on the number of contacts or users
  • Duplicate functionality
  • Hidden inefficiencies

What looks “cheap” often becomes expensive when you add up the total stack and hit realistic usage volumes

2️⃣ Time

Time is the silent, hidden drain.

  • Manual follow-ups
  • Switching between platforms
  • Copying data
  • Checking multiple inboxes
  • Updating spreadsheets
  • Trying to integrate systems, each with its own moving parts.

Many business owners effectively give themselves a second, unpaid job: “Marketing Administrator.”

Are you the Hassled Hamster or Cool Hamster?

3️⃣ Control

This is the one people don’t talk about enough.

Control means:

  • Knowing where leads come from
  • Seeing your pipeline clearly
  • Owning your data
  • Adjusting campaigns quickly
  • Having visibility across conversations

When systems are fragmented, control disappears.

What about outsourcing? When marketing is outsourced, you need more control built into the contract. not less. I have seen many small businesses paying £x,000’s monthly with little visibility of results or control. Ending the contract and taking back control can be even more painful and time-consuming.

The Trade-Off Problem

Most businesses optimise for two corners of the triangle:

Low Cost + High Control = Massive Time Investment (You do everything yourself across multiple tools.)

Low Time + High Control = High Cost (You hire agencies and premium systems.)

Low Cost + Low Time = Low Control (You outsource cheaply, losing visibility.)

No wonder marketing feels stressful.

The Real Goal Isn’t Perfection — It’s Balance

If your marketing feels harder than it should, it’s probably not effort. Its structure.

The most stable businesses don’t eliminate tension. They reduce it.

They consolidate systems. They automate intelligently. They centralise data.

When your CRM, conversations, automation, reporting and scheduling live inside one ecosystem, the triangle shifts.

  • Costs are reduced through consolidation.
  • Time is reduced through automation.
  • Control increases through visibility.

That’s not a tactic. That’s infrastructure.

And infrastructure changes everything.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be exploring this theme from different angles.
